Optimizing Oil Production in the Bakken

The Bakken Production Optimization Program (BPOP) was established in June 2013 to facilitate Bakken petroleum system oil recovery while simultaneously reducing the environmental footprint of oil and gas development. This program is administered by the EERC, with funding from the North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC) Oil and Gas Research Program (OGRP) and the North Dakota petroleum industry.

Through BPOP, the EERC collaborates closely with industry partners and North Dakota to tackle emerging opportunities and challenges in Bakken development. BPOP aims to boost production efficiency by coordinating reservoir management, well design, processing, and waste management. Through applied research, it strives to reduce carbon intensity, offer science-based guidance for sustainable Bakken development, and equip stakeholders with the knowledge needed for innovative strategies to propel the Bakken forward.

DSU SETBACK RULES

BPOP evaluated how proposed setback rule changes would impact drilling spacing units (DSUs) through performance testing of simulation cases from multiple operators. The EERC then presented its findings to North Dakota officials.

WELL COMPLETION AND PRODUCTION DASHBOARD

BPOP developed the Well Completion and Production Dashboard, offering partners a real-time tool to analyze production and completion data and determine optimal parameters using machine learning.

3-MILE LATERAL WELLS STUDY

The results of a study of 275 3-mile lateral wells support the continued development of the longer laterals that benefit operators through reduced costs and lower environmental impact.

LIBERTY’S EOR PILOT PROJECT, EAST NESSON SITE

The EERC spearheaded laboratory, modeling, and field-based investigations for an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) pilot project in the East Nesson Field. The project utilized produced gas injection with rapid water pulses, resulting in significant incremental oil production.

STUDY OF BAKKEN REFRACTURING

A review and analysis of a dataset of refractures conducted in 341 wells provided insight into the impacts of different completion- and geology-related factors on short- and long-term oil production of refractured wells in the Bakken.

EVALUATION OF MECHANISMS OF BAKKEN WELL SOURING

The EERC research team identified several potential mechanisms of souring in the Bakken, including thermochemical sulfur reduction.

CARBON INTENSITY TOOL

A carbon intensity analytical tool that provides information related to gas flaring, lease gas combustion, and tank vapors for selected wells (as selected by the tool user) was developed.

FLARING REDUCTION

Polar Bear™, a flare reduction technology, was developed to recover storage tank vapors. This technology offers cost-effective compression solutions and significantly reduces maintenance compared to traditional methods.

BAKKEN GEOLOGIC CLUSTER ANALYSIS TOOL

BPOP created an interactive Bakken analysis tool, enabling users to segment the Bakken into clusters based on geologic and fluid properties data. This tool facilitates analysis of drilling, completion, and production parameters using three distinct clustering algorithms.

Industry Members

BPOP is a public–private partnership harnessing North Dakota research scientists and industry to maximize the Bakken oil play’s productivity while reducing its environmental footprint.
