Clean Energy to Hydrogen Project
Xcel Energy is evaluating the use of existing and future grid assets, including the growing fleet of renewable resources, such as wind and solar, for hydrogen production. The company plans to utilize renewable-powered electrolysis to produce hydrogen. Potential locations within Xcel Energy’s Upper Midwest and Colorado service territories are being assessed, with a focus on exploring various end-use options for the hydrogen produced.
Xcel Energy's Commitment
In 2018, Xcel Energy became the first energy company in the nation to establish a vision for 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050 while prioritizing safety, reliability, and affordability. To date, the company has reduced carbon emissions from electricity by an estimated 57% from 2005 levels, positioning it to achieve its interim goal of 80% carbon reduction by 2030 based on current load projections, bolstered by the company’s closure of 25 coal units since 2007 with no worker layoffs. The company has also expanded its vision to include net-zero commitments in natural gas and clean transportation. Xcel Energy’s involvement in HH2H underscores its dedication to advancing clean energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions in a way that maintains reliable service and keeps bills low for customers.
